Waxing Ransomed Heart...

Me: Lord, I have been trying to dig into my passions. I used to say that I wanted to be a baseball player, and I also used to think that I wanted to be a pilot. But I don't really consider those to be passions. What do You say about this?

God: Well, I like baseball, too. There is a certain nostalgia surrounding baseball to which many people are drawn. In part, it is because of the warrior in you. Baseball is a battle, one that can turn at any moment with one swing of the bat or with the extra stretch made to catch a homerun ball. It is also a very unifying game for fans and for players. Teamwork is essential. Fans find common ground by complaining about the umpire or pitching or in celebrating the comeback in the last inning.

Patrick, all this is in you. You are a warrior. You love the adventure of baseball, you love the battle and you love the unexpected turns it can take, you love to see a good play come together to accomplish something great. You love finding common ground with other people, because you love people, and you love to share in the joy of victory with them.

Your love of flying is because you love to see the beauty in the sky and on the earth below. To add, you love your own father, a pilot, with whom you have wanted to have something in common, so you have kept this love of flying. Other sons have keepsakes or trinkets from their father, but you have kept this.

Patrick, you know that all this is from Me. Your passion is not these activities. You are getting in touch with your own heart, and it is a heart for adventure, people, beauty and victory, all of which point to Me.

Me: So, I am back where I started.

God: Not really. You have just dug up four qualities of who you are, who I created you to be. What do you think it takes to lead? These qualities may not seem like major revelation to you, but your problem is embracing these things and not to keep them buried for fear of having them turn on you. Your years in Spain were spent by having your heart trampled almost to death. It has taken a while to get you back here to see who you really are in Me.

Me: Lord, all this sounds a lot like John Eldredge stuff.

God: Where do you think he got it? You are mighty, Patrick, more so than you will see on this Earth. You are a leader who loves those he leads, and encourages through perilous adventure, who sees beauty in the adventure and can describe it to others, and who keeps going until the day of victorious rejoicing. I created you very carefully, and I love how you turned out. You are My son, My spitting image and you delight Me.
